Turkey in the Straw is one of those standard hokey fiddle tunes that everyone knows and that everyone thinks they shouldn't take seriously. Not true! In this weeks lesson I not only teach you the basic melody version of the tune, but a "hot" version as played by Aubrey Haynie on one of his fiddle albums. Aubrey Haynie is one of the top bluegrass and country fiddlers, right up there with Stuart Duncan, and you will love his style. The great thing about the version you're going to learn is it has all kinds of licks that you can use in other tunes as well. It’s a fast G tune with two parts. Enjoy!

I am a begginer intermediate with 30 years experience in bluegrass guitar, I have some theory I see it but not yet absorbed. I Played “Turkey in the Straw” Well in first position, but never went into the 2nd position as you did on the “E” string. I took a lesson with Bobby Hicks at the Steve Kauffman Kamp. He tought the song “Tallassee” which tought us to move ino the second position! Could you teach “Tallassee” which will bring us into the second position in a structured format. It would help me in this song!
Tallahassee is definitely a great tune. I especially like doign it with twin fiddles. Maybe I’ll do a twin fiddle lesson on it!
Hi Mike. Could you put a guitar backup for each song? It might really help if you had mando, bass and guitar. Especially for young students who need to feel the energy. Just a thought, and Matt can help cause he is not busy anyway, haha. I really feel that this is a great teaching site and will promote it with our students. Thanks
