For our first lesson on the mandolin I'm going over the basics: how to choose your equipment, how to hold the mandolin, how to hold the pick, and proper pick technique.  Good form is important to establish from the beginning, otherwise you could suffer from pain while playing and you will be limited for the rest of your playing career.
