For this week's lesson I transcribed Tony Rice's solo on "There's More Pretty Girls Than One" off of the 1980 album, Skaggs & Rice. That is one of my favorite bluegrass albums, as it features the pure 'brother style' harmony singing of two of bluegrass' most iconic voices. Tony Rice's solo contains all the elements of a great Rice solo, and I break it down note for note. I also use this solo to explain how to use the sensibilities of a rhythm player in your solos, and how to play within basic chord shapes to enhance you improvisation.

Hi Mike, great lesson. Have a question around the TAB and pick strokes. It was always my understanding the down beats were always a down stroke and the up beats/ ands an up stroke. In the TAB for this lesson, I’m not sure that’s case. Am I missing something?

thanks for the question. Indeed, playing a down stroke on the down beats is a good rule of thumb, especially for beginning pickers. But like all rules, this one is made to be broken. It’s really more of a helpful guideline, and as you start learning more advanced solos, or watch really creative pickers like Tony Rice, you’ll notice that they use hammer-ons and pullofs liberally and often deviate from the “down pick on a down beat” rule. Tony Rice in particular sometimes uses a hammer-on or pull-off to get into a down beat – so he doesn’t pick the downbeat at all! There are infinite picking patterns, and it is the multitude of phrasing options that makes one guitar picker different from another.
