This week I posted our first jazz lesson! Sweet Georgia Brown is the classic of all classics. In this lesson I cover the basic melody and the chord progression behind it. Later on, I'm going to teach you a solo by Benny Goodman, a famous clarinet player. I'll break down his solo and teach you some fundamentals of jazz improvisation.
Although most people don't usually think of the fiddle as a jazz instrument, it actually has a proud place in jazz music. Guys like Stephanne Grappelli, Joe Venuti, and Stuff Smith were playing jazz music back when people were still trying to define what jazz is, and now guys like Billy Contreras and Christian Howes are taking it to new heights.
The great thing about learning jazz on the fiddle is that it really requires you to transcribe solos from different instruments and play them on the fiddle. That process will develop your ear, and really help you to improvise on the fly
Enjoy!
